Transport Minister Sibusiso Ndebele, MEC Bheki Nkosi, their contingents and a host of commuters were in attendance to witness the launch of the much anticipated rail rapid system. The Gautrain started operations with a maiden trip from Sandton business district to the OR Tambo International Airport on 8 June 2010 in time for the football World Cup.
Gauteng Premier Nomvula Mokonyane said the Gautrain is the latest in a number of initiatives aimed at revolutionising the public transport system in Gauteng after the Rea Vaya BRT system launched in Johannesbur. On the other and MEC for Roads and Transport Bheki Nkosi stressed that the system will help in changing the perception of public transport adding that it was the dawn of a new legacy in public transport.
Gauteng province will host the opening ceremony and the final match of the 2010 football tournament and Gautrain is expected to play a significant role in enabling easy, safe and reliable movement of fans and commuters in general. With the OR Tambo International Airport being an important entry point to the province and country, the Gautrain is well placed to facilitate rapid movement of fans and commuters to various destinations.
The Gautrain rapid rail system, the first of its kind in the continent, offers convenience, reliability, affordability, safety and security. The system is guarded by highly trained security personnel assisted by closed circuit televisions and satellite monitoring on all stations. A trip from Sandton to OR Tambo International Airport takes only fourteen minutes in style and comfort.
The cost of the train between the different destinations is as follows:
* Airport service: from Sandton, Marlboro and Rhodesfield: R100,00
* Commuter service: Sandton to Marlboro: R16,50
* Rhodesfield to Marlboro: R18,50
