Are you a young woman or man living in Gauteng? Or are you a resident with a disability?
If you have answered yes to any of the questions above then the Gauteng Provincial Government (GPG) is looking to do business with you.
"We urge all young people; women groupings and people with disabilities to come forward and take advantage of the business opportunities we have for them. While most of the people from the historically-disadvantaged they are not seeking bigger projects that can sustain them and make them grow. We want people to move into sectors such as, furniture-manufacturing and consulting," Matlakala Motloung, the Gauteng Head of Communication said.
According to the Office of the Premier's Annual Report for the 2011/12 financial year, the OoP had a budget of more than R228 million. Of that amount, R66 million went to businesses owned by youth, women and people with disabilities.
"This is not nearly enough as we are still not meeting our targets as many people within the targeted groups are not coming forward to take advantage of these opportunities of doing business with government," Motloung said.
The GPG has targeted to spend 30-percent of its budget on women, 10-percent on youth, 5-percent on people with disabilities and 80-percent on Historically Disadvantaged Individuals.
"While we performed better in the past financial year in terms of giving more business to some of these designated groups; more can still need to be done. We again call on the targeted groups to organise themselves into co-operatives so that they can seize these opportunities," Motloung said.
Motloung added that they were putting emphasis on people with disabilities as this is the area where the province was not performing to expectations.
The GPG is confident that through its interventions more people from targeted groups will benefit from its procurement processes.
