A high powered delegation from Gauteng Provincial Government is in Cape Town as part of the Sports, Events and Tourism Exchange Conference to lure major events and conferencing to the province.
The delegation is led by Gauteng Department of Sports, Arts Culture and Recreation MEC Lebogang Maile, Head of Department Busi Mhanga and Gauteng Tourism Authority CEO Dawn Robertson.
MEC Maile is expected to participate in various activities, amongst them, interactions with international delegates with a view of promoting Gauteng as a preferred destination for sports, tourism and business.
Maile is also using this platform to start engagements with relevant authorities on hosting the 2014 Sport Accord.
Sport Accord Convention is the world's premier annual event at the service of sport, focused on driving positive change internationally, and dedicated to engaging rights holders, organising committees, cities, businesses and other organisations in the development of sport.
“Living by our province’s slogan of being ‘the Home of Champions, we will continue to strive to bring other world class events to Gauteng so that our people can be empowered and enlightened by being a part of world class sport, arts and culture programmes,” said MEC Maile.
Having successfully delivered a third of the FIFA 2010 World Cup matches and programme last year and fresh from the inaugural Tourism summit, the province is pushing hard to attract major international sports events into its shores.
“Work is underway to position the province as a major player and industry leader in the Meetings Incentives Conferencing and Events (MICE) sector with the Gauteng web portal expected to serve as a main point of contact,” said Gauteng Tourism Authority CEO Dawn Robertson.
With the Sandton Convention Centre and other major conferencing venues around the province, the region is set to increase its domination in this sector with special focus into the African Continent and other major trading partners. Efforts are underway to further build a world-class Tshwane Convention Centre and the Ekurhuleni Aerotropolis project will give more impetus to this positioning.
