Gauteng Transport on repairing of Goede Hoop Avenue Route sinkhole

Repairs to the Goede Hoop Avenue Route sinkhole complete

The Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the public for their co-operation and patience during the repairs to the Goede Hoop Avenue Road Route between Elardus Park in Pretoria and Kempton Park.

The road had to be temporarily closed after a sinkhole was found to have developed on the side of road on the 20th of December 2013. The formation of the sinkhole was attributed to the dolomite that is found in the area, associated with rainfall and water action eventually exposed the cavity that was underneath.

The department moved swiftly and called in Geotechnical specialists to ascertain the extent of the sinkhole and advice on the safety of using the road. The specialists, upon completing the road’s stability tests on the sinkhole, advised that the road should be closed to traffic as there were safety risks because of lack of stability

The road was closed from the 20th of December 2013 to the 23rd of January 2014 and the sinkhole was repaired within a month. The department would like to announce that the road is now ready for use by the public from Friday 24 January 2014.
