Gauteng MEC for Roads and Transport, Kedibone Diale-Tlabela, has commended the Gauteng Transport Inspectorate (GTI) for its continued dedication and professionalism in enforcing traffic and public transport laws across the province.
The commendation follows high-impact stop-and-search operations conducted by GTI officers, in collaboration with the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC), across Gauteng’s major metropolitan municipalities as part of the Department’s ongoing #RemoveSkorokoro campaign.
Between 17 and 23 August 2026, GTI conducted targeted enforcement operations along major public transport corridors, focusing on roadworthiness, valid documentation, driver compliance and adherence to road traffic and public transport legislation.
During the week-long operations, twenty-five (25) minibuses were discontinued after being found to be unroadworthy and posing a serious risk to passengers and other road users. The vehicles were found with a range of serious safety defects, including defective braking systems, severely worn tyres, non-functional headlights and brake lights, faulty indicators, cracked windscreens, damaged or torn seats, engine-related defects, and other mechanical faults that rendered the vehicles unsafe for use on public roads.
The operations also resulted in twenty-four (24) discontinuation notices being issued across the province, comprising one (1) in Tshwane and twenty-three (23) in Johannesburg.
GTI officers further uncovered concerning levels of non-compliance among minibus taxi operators. A total of thirty-six (36) minibuses were found operating without valid licence discs, while twenty-five (25) minibus taxi drivers were found operating without valid driving licences.
In addition, the enforcement operations resulted in six (6) arrests for driving under the influence (DUI), highlighting the Inspectorate’s resolve to address both traffic violations and criminal conduct that places the lives of passengers and other road users at risk.
To strengthen accountability and ensure that traffic violations are dealt with, officers issued five hundred and seventy-seven (577) handwritten AARTO infringement notices during the reporting period. These comprised one hundred and ten (110) in Tshwane, four hundred and thirty-nine (439) in Johannesburg and twenty-eight (28) in Sedibeng District.
A further nine hundred and forty-eight (948) electronic infringement notices were processed through the Inspectorate’s e-Force devices. These comprised one hundred and fifty-two (152) in Tshwane, seven hundred and twenty-six (726) in Johannesburg, and seventy (70) in the Sedibeng District.
Commenting on the enforcement results, MEC Diale-Tlabela said the continued detection of drivers operating without valid driving licences requires sustained intervention and closer cooperation with the public transport industry.
“The continued discovery of drivers operating without valid driving licences is deeply concerning. We are in constant engagements with taxi associations to strengthen interventions and ensure this practice is stopped. Driving without a valid licence, operating a vehicle under the influence (DUI) and putting unroadworthy vehicles on our roads cannot be treated as minor transgressions. The fines, notices and discontinuation of unsafe vehicles are not merely enforcement measures; they are necessary interventions to protect commuters and all road users,” said MEC Diale-Tlabela.
The MEC also welcomed the ongoing collaboration between the GTI, RTMC and other law-enforcement agencies, emphasising that sustained enforcement remains critical to changing behaviour, improving compliance and removing dangerous vehicles and non-compliant drivers from the road network.
The latest enforcement results form part of the Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport’s broader efforts to strengthen compliance with road traffic and public transport legislation, while ensuring that vehicles and drivers that pose a threat to public safety are dealt with decisively.
