The Anti-hijack unit of the Gauteng Traffic Police in the Department of Community Safety today recovered a hijacked frontliner truck in Diepkloof, with a consignment of cement tiles worth R46 000 still intact. The driver was attacked by three armed men who forced him to drive the vehicle from Alrode to Diepkloof where the truck was recovered. The suspects were arrested and will appear at the Orlando Magistrate Court soon, facing charges of armed robbery and hijacking.
Over the weekend, the Gauteng Traffic Police’s High Speed Unit arrested 43 motorists for various traffic violations ranging from speeding, fraud, attempted bribery, driving under the influence of alcohol, reckless and negligent driving.
In Bronkhorspruit, eight were arrested for reckless and negligent driving, one motorist was driving 102km/h on 60km/h zone and upon stopped by traffic officers, and he tried to offer a R50 bribe. Another motorist was driving 196km/h on a 120/h zone, two were arrested for overtaking facing oncoming traffic and a motorcyclist was driving 164km/h on a 120km/h zone. A motorcyclist was also arrested for driving 182km/h on a 120km/h zone, a truck driving 105km/h on a 60km/h zone, and a motorist for overtaking on a blind rise.
On the Mabopane Highway, eight motorists were arrested for speeding, one for 187km/h on a 120km/h zone, 204km/h on a 120km/h zone, 181km/h on a 120km/h zone, 142km/h on a 120km/h zone, 179km/h on a 120km/h zone, 181km/h on a 120km/h zone, 138km/h on a 120km/h zone and one motorist for 191/h on a 120km/h zone.
In Thaba Tshwane, Pretoria, twelve motorists were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol, one for falsification of driver license, address and identity document, and three were arrested for interfering with traffic officers duties after arresting motorists for driving under the influence.
In the West Rand, Westonaria, three motorists were arrested for speeding. One was driving 186km/h on a 120km/h zone, the other for 162km/h on a 100km/h zone and another motorist for 164km/h on a 100km/h zone.
These arrests are in line with the Gauteng Road Strategy which has already achieved 30% reduction of road accidents and fatalities over the last five years.
Motorists are urged to always obey rules of the road as they pose a serious danger to other motorists.
