Gauteng Sport on Soweto Rugby Club victories

The Soweto Rugby Club overwhelmed Eastern Cape’s Ngculu Zebras 27 – 6 in the final to win the Soweto Rugby tournament for the first time after 3 attempts on Monday, 28 April 2014, at the Bramfischer Multi-Purpose Centre in Soweto.

The victory was a phenomenal triumph for the Soweto club as they had been disappointed in the past 2 finals by another Eastern Cape side, the talented Eye of the Tiger Academy.

This year, the Zebras came out as the wild horses in the tournament scoring two tries to nothing for their first match in a well deserved 10 – 0 victory against last year’s winners Eye of the Tiger. The Zebras went on to overcome KZN Vets 20 – 13, before arming themselves for a final showdown with the hosts.

But it was clear that this was to be the year in which the Warriors of Soweto (as they’re affectionately known) reigned, judging from their bossing of all their fixtures, starting with the 20 – 13 win over the Eldoranians and another defeat inflicted on Eersterus, with the score ending 5 – 0 in favour of Soweto. It all went uphill from there as the Warriors made light work of the Zebras in the final to lift the cup.

Soweto Rugby Club Secretary Zola Ntlokoma was thrilled with the hosts performance in the tournament, having earlier called for them to make the township proud, Zola added that: “The tournament has grown since 2012 when it was started as a development initiative, three years later it has become a major role-player in producing and exposing more township and rural talent in our efforts to meet transformation targets set in the Minister's call of a 60-40 percent ration in quotas.”

The Soweto Rugby Tournament is organised in partnership with the Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, the City of Johannesburg and the Gauteng Lions Rugby Union.

Gauteng Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation MEC, Lebogang Maile, has endorsed the tournament as one of the flagship projects of his department’s Club Development programme.

Now in its third year, the tournament took place over a 3 day period from the 26th - 28th of April 2014, at the Bramfischer Multi-Purpose Centre, featuring 10 Senior teams and 10 Under-13 teams from throughout Gauteng, North West, KwaZulu-Natal and Eastern Cape.
