With the preparations for the prestigious awards ceremony, taking place in Midrand on 7June, well underway The Gauteng Sports Awards has officially introduced its adjudication panel. This weekend, starting tomorrow will be packed with serious brainstorming for the four experts, Professor Denver Hendricks, Barry Hendricks, Karabo Semenya, Ramatsiyi Moholoa and Moekie Grobbelaar.
Each of the sporting professionals will contribute their expertise in balancing the adjudication process so that all submissions are fairly judged. The panel has been carefully selected to represent each of the nomination categories, taking from each adjudicator an exclusive skill set.
With a wealth of experience due to his many years contributing to sport in the academic arena, Prof Denver Hendricks joins the team as an expert from this perspective. He has held many prestigious positions in academia including deputy dean of the University of the Western Cape and dean of the University of Port Elizabeth. He has also been awarded a fellowship by the SA Alliance of Sport Science, Physical Education and Recreation. He is currently the Director General for Sport and Recreation South Africa. His expertise is considered a valuable asset to the panel.
Representing the sport federations and councils is Barry Hendricks; President of the Gauteng Sports Council. He prides himself on being a pro-active president, which makes him the perfect candidate to join the panel. As someone who works with sport federations and councils he is equipped with an astute understanding of the workings of sport at grassroots level. His expertise in understanding the talent required to prosper at a national sporting level makes him a perfect choice to represent the federations and councils.
Karabo Semenya is a sporting specialist who has been chosen to represent sport development is well acquainted with the requirements for sport development in Gauteng. She is an Assistant Director for Sport and Recreation in Region D, Soweto where she is tasked with making sure that Sport and Recreation is accessible and available to the communities she works in.
Representing the media, which has been noted as an important entity in the development and growth of local sport, is Ramatsiyi Moholoa. He is a senior sport journalist for the Sowetan newspaper and is well renowned for his critical approach to reporting on sport.
Finally, Moekie Grobbelaar has joined the panel as a representative of the disability sector in sport. She was voted South Africa’s woman of the month in 2009 and has used her influence as a disabled sportswoman. She represented South Africa in the Paralympic games in Sydney in 2000 where she won a bronze medal in power lifting. She forms part of a group of amazing women in sport that have done South Africa proud on a global platform.
The panel will spend April 11 to 13 deliberating over the submissions using their unique skills to reach a collectively balanced decision.
With each of these adjudicators the Gauteng Sports Awards has ensured that each sector is represented to ensure the preservation of the democratic process in judging. As soon as the adjudication process has concluded, the verification process by auditors will take place on 14 April.
