Gauteng senior citizens speak

The Gauteng Provincial Legislature (GPL) will host the third Sector Parliament for Senior Citizens as part of its oversight, law-making and public participation mandate as prescribed by the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa.

The  portfolio committee on Social Development in the GPL, led by Hon. Patricia Chueu will host this annual senior citizens parliament under the theme “Combating abuse against the elderly in families, homes for the aged, healthcare centres and communities”.

The Senior Citizens Sector Parliament is aimed at amongst others; to encourage senior citizens to take part in decision making and legislative processes; to provide a platform for senior citizen to share experiences and challenges that face them; to profile the GPL’s mandate of public participation, law making, oversight and cooperative governance.

More than three hundred senior citizens from all five regions of Gauteng are expected to attend.

Amongst other keys stakeholders that have been invited and expected to attend are MEC for Social Development Hon. Nandi Mayathula-Khoza; South African Older Persons Forum and South Africa Human Rights Commission.
