Gauteng Government reaffirms its commitment to work with communities to address traffic signals problems
The Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport (GPDRT) has reaffirmed its commitment to address traffic signal issues on provincial roads in the City
The Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport (GPDRT) has reaffirmed its commitment to address traffic signal issues on provincial roads in the City of Joburg (CoJ) Metropolitan Municipality after taking over the maintenance function from the Joburg Roads Agency (JRA).
The department took over the function of maintaining its 250 traffic signals (out of more than 2000) in the city from the JRA after the CoJ-owned entity failed to comply with the South African Revenue Service (SARS), which meant that the GPDRT couldn’t pay JRA.
“After realising JRA’s problems with SARS, the GPDRT had to prioritise road safety and Smart Mobility in the metro and create internal capacity to maintain its 250 traffic signals out of the more than 2000 in the city,” remarked MEC for Public Transport and Roads Infrastructure Jacob Mamabolo.
Since taking over maintenance of the traffic signals in April 2022, the Department has made significant progress in repairing traffic signals in intersections, including Columbine Avenue and the R82, the R101 and Olifantsfontein Road, Swartkoppies Road and Kliprivier Drive, and also Witkoppen Road and Montecasino Boulevard among others.
“We have also created a number of digital platforms for road users to report faulty or nonfunctional traffic signals. I am very pleased with the work that our technical teams are doing in ensuring that we repair reported faults within a reasonable period of time,” added Mamabolo.
Members of the public are encouraged to report any traffic signal faults to TrafficSignals@gauteng.gov.za or make use of the mobile application: PotholeFixingGP (only available on Android) to report any road maintenance issues such as potholes, road markings and/or grass cutting among others.
