Gauteng Roads and Transport opens upgraded D1944 Road near Rust der Winter

The ANC-led Gauteng government today officially opened the R158 million D1944 road project near the Rust der Winter and Mkhombo Nature Reserves, north-east of Tshwane.

MEC for Roads and Transport, Ismail Vadi, said that the 11.5 km tertiary road project entailed the full construction and upgrade of the road from a gravel to a tarred road.

"This road infrastructure investment underpins the ANC-led government’s commitment to stimulating economic development and foster social integration in this region,” said Vadi.

"The increased flow of goods and services along this route will assist in stimulating the local economy as well as integrating agricultural and tourism opportunities with transport corridors,” he said.

"The project is in line with the provincial government’s commitment to providing world-class road infrastructure, enabling new investments and unlocking potential for local and regional economic development," said Vadi.

He added that the upgraded road is expected to reduce travel times as well as allow for safe transportation of people, goods and services between Gauteng, Limpopo and Mpumalanga provinces.

The main roadworks undertaken included reconstruction of the road and culverts; the building of two bridges; placing of road markings and signage as well as the erection of bus shelters along the route.

The project created over 100 employment opportunities with the youth, women and persons with disabilities particularly targeted for empowerment.

Furthermore, as part of the provincial government’s developmental programme, the main contractor provided work and training opportunities that are Construction Education and Training Authority (CETA) approved.

This to ensure that sub-contracted companies have registered, accredited training to assist with their future business endeavours.
