Gauteng Roads and Transport launches UITP-TAG Regional Training Centre

Gauteng launches the UITP-TAG Regional Training Centre

The Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport in partnership with the Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS) today, 25 October 2022, launched the UITP-TAG Regional Training Centre in Johannesburg.

The centre - the first of its kind in Africa - will be based at the offices of the Transport Authority of Gauteng (TAG).

In September 2022, TAG signed a Memorandum of Agreement with International Association of Public Transport (UITP) to establish the UITP – TAG Africa Regional Training Centre, which will serve Gauteng, South Africa, and the African continent.

Speaking at the launch, MEC for Transport and Logistics Kedibone Diale-Tlabela commended the leadership of GIBS for partnering with the Department.

"We wish to thank the leadership and management of GIBS for agreeing to partner with us in implementing capacity building initiatives intended to position TAG as the centre of excellence for the public transport in our beautiful province.

"The centre will partner with different universities and others interested in public transport and business administration to strengthen knowledge and skills base of the training centre," the MEC said.

MEC added that the training centre will help municipalities to reimagine their public transport systems, build them to world class standards, and in the process create jobs and make travelling safer.

" I see lots of learning and development opportunities, and I encourage all stakeholders to take advantage of the presence of the training centre in our province and to participate in the training.

" I challenge the UITP-TAG to help us through knowledge and skills development to reposition the transport sector as a catalyst at the centre of a growing and inclusive economy," she added.

UITP is a non-profit advocacy organization for public transport authorities and operators, policy decision-makers, scientific institutions, and the public transport supply and service industry.

From Wednesday 26 to Thursday 27, October 2022, there will be the an inaugural training and will be focusing on the implementation of clean energy vehicles.

"It is a topic that is redefining how we will do business going forward, and how we will actively reduce carbon emissions collectively throughout the world," said MEC.

The MEC has also instructed the HOD of the Department and the CEO of TAG to ensure that the training offered attract and benefit unemployed youth and unemployed graduates in general.

"It will also be satisfying if most of the trainees and beneficiaries are women from the townships and villages of Gauteng," MEC concluded.
