Gauteng Roads and Transport on concerns around Garsfontein road upgrade project

The Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport (GDRT) is actively undertaking upgrading and rehabilitation of the province’s road network, focusing on key priority routes to improve road safety, enhance mobility, and preserve critical road infrastructure across Gauteng.

Various rehabilitation projects include dualization, pavement improvements, vegetation and roadside maintenance, repairs to traffic signs and other road furniture.

As part of the upgrade package, the Department is currently undertaking a thirty-month upgrading project of Garsfontein Road (K50) to support the Mooikloof Mega City development. The residential and commercial mega project is a strategic integrated project aimed at providing access to lifestyle services aimed at lower income groups.

Roadworks along Garsfontein Road are underway, with reconstruction and upgrade works being undertaken. The upgrades will result in a divided four-lane road between January Masilela and Lorista Streets with pedestrian lanes installed.

However, some sections of the road, outside the current construction limits, will be attended to by the Department’s internal road maintenance teams. The teams will be assigned to conduct pothole patching, rubble removal and general upkeep of the road.

The upgrades to Garsfontein Road are set to improve connectivity, increase roadway capacity and improve general road safety.

The contractor has also put in place an approved traffic accommodation plan which is continuously monitored. Lane restrictions are also in place at intermittent locations along the sections of the road. This is expected to result in slow-moving traffic leading to delays, especially during peak traffic periods and motorists are warned to approach with increased caution.

GDRT is also open to working with affected communities to find sustainable solutions that may affect them during the construction period. Stakeholder meetings are held for this purpose.

It has also noted that there has not been material contractual non-compliance affecting public safety recorded on the active section.

The Department is also undertaking roadworks along a number of priority provincial routes including WF Nkomo, Molefe Makinta, (N14) Ben Schoeman, R25 (Bronkhorstspruit Road), R59, D331 in the West Rand, M1 and Hendrik Potgieter Drive in Johannesburg.

These projects are undertaken after having been identified in Tshwane, Sedibeng, the West Rand and the City of Johannesburg, following comprehensive road condition assessments.

Gauteng MEC for Roads and Transport Kedibone Diale Tlabela has indicated that these interventions are intended to extend the lifespan of province’s road network, improve road safety, and support economic productivity.

She has also maintained that all Department’s contractors working on projects must strive to, at all times, “deliver a quality product, on time and within budget”.

The Department wishes to appeal for understanding and cooperation during the construction phase of the project.
