Gauteng residents give premier’s State of the Province Address a big thumbs up

Gauteng residents are optimistic about the future following Premier Nomvula Mokonyane’s State of the Province Address on Monday at the Gauteng provincial legislature.

Speaking to Gautengonline this afternoon, 22 February, Tiny Mazibuko of the Boipelo Community Development project said she was excited about the premier’s speech, especially her comments on the agricultural sector.

“We are very excited about the opening of the Agricultural College that the premier spoke about in her speech. Also, the fact that cooperatives were not left out is also good,” she said.

She noted that the premier’s remarks that more cooperatives would supply goods to the provincial government institutions were well received among emerging farmers.

And the Sokhumi Tribal Authority Chief, Jim Mahlangu said:

“It was a very good speech, especially the part where the premier encouraged all stakeholders in working together in fighting crime and creating jobs”.

Chief Mahlangu said that the government’s commitment to the fight against crime was important, “especially the fact that the province will be hosting the opening and final matches of the 2010 FIFA World Cup”.

“Our youth are unemployed and through the government skills training our children can do something about their lives. We must all make sure that by the time the 2010 FIFA World Cup starts, Gauteng’s streets are safe and free for anyone to walk on at any given time,” he said.

Another guest at the legislature, Rochelle Ramsamy summarised Mokonyane’s speech as very interesting and down to earth.

“She mentioned all the things that were expected like crime, education, infrastructure, creation of jobs and health services,” said Ramsamy.
