Gauteng is ready for World Cup

As part of displaying its readiness and promoting brand Gauteng for the World Cup, the Gauteng Provincial Government hosted the province's 2010 Readiness Summit. The event, organised by the Gauteng Tourism Authority, took place at the Gallagher Estate, Midrand, Johannesburg on 22 April 2010.

The objectives of the summit included the promotion and showcasing tourist attractions, to enable small, micro and medium enterprises to benefit from the proceeds of hosting the World Cup and to generate a lasting legacy for the province. The summit also afforded delegates to gain more information about sport being used to heal wounds and unite nations as in both South Korea and Germany.

Pointing to infrastructure developments taking place in the province Premier, Ms Nomvula Mokonyane assured those present that the province was ready for the tournament and reiterated the need for all involved to work together in hosting a successful 2010 World Cup. Mokonyane added that the construction of roads will enhance mobility in the province. The Gautrain offers rail convenience and style to fans commuting between the OR Tambo International Airport and Sandton as well as the development of various stadiums as host venues.

The Premier also emphasised the important role tourism plays in the economy and suggested that visitors and locals must be taken to important historic sites such as the Maropeng (Cradle of Humankind), Freedom Park, Voortrekkerhoogte Monument and other attractions that abound in the province. This would assist in ensuring that visitors familiarise themselves with the historic events that took place in the province and those that are currently making history.

As a gateway to the country, the Gauteng is busy putting final touches to plans and programmes before fans and visitors descend to the province for the soccer spectacle.
