The Gauteng Provincial Legislature’s Portfolio Committee on Community Safety extends its warm wishes to all residents of Gauteng for a safe, peaceful and blessed Easter weekend, as Christians across the country commemorate the passing and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
This sacred period is one of reflection, renewal and spiritual significance for many and the Committee encourages all residents to observe it in a manner that promotes unity, compassion and respect for one another.
The Committee is mindful that this period is also characterised by increased travel, as families and communities journey to various destinations for worship and to spend time with loved ones. In this regard, the Committee urges all road users to exercise heightened caution and responsibility.
Motorists are called upon to strictly adhere to the rules of the road, avoid reckless and negligent driving and refrain from drinking and driving. Law enforcement agencies will be maintaining a visible presence across the province to ensure compliance and enhance public safety.
While extending these well wishes, the Committee expresses serious concern regarding a reported incident in which a 16-year-old boy was allegedly shot and killed by a police officer. Although the circumstances surrounding the incident remain unclear at this stage, the Committee views the matter with the utmost gravity.
The Committee notes and welcomes the investigation currently being undertaken by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) and emphasises the importance of a thorough, transparent and expeditious process. The Committee will continue to closely monitor developments and expects that accountability will be ensured in accordance with the law.
The safety and security of all residents, particularly vulnerable groups such as children and women remain a priority for the Committee. Incidents of this nature underscore the need for continued vigilance, professionalism and adherence to the highest standards of conduct by all law enforcement officials.
The Portfolio Committee on Community Safety once again wishes all residents a meaningful and safe Easter period.
