Today the Gauteng Provincial Legislature hosted a successful Official Opening of the Legislature. The Opening is a platform provided by the Legislature to the Premier to account to the people of Gauteng, and to present the Government programme for the year ahead.
As a commitment to take the Legislature to the people, this was the second time that the Gauteng Provincial Legislature held its Official Opening outside the normal legislative precinct. As part of Constitutional requirements for corporative governance and building partnerships, the Official Opening was held in Mamelodi in partnership with the City of Tshwane and the University of Pretoria.
The occasion was attended by some 2000 stakeholders, Members of the House including the Premier and Members of the Executive Council, diplomatic community, Executive Mayors and Speakers from the Metro and Local Municipalities, corporate citizens, other representatives from other organs of State such as the judiciary and other stakeholders.
The occasion was indeed a resounding success and the Premier outlined a detailed plan which forms the basis on which the Members of the Legislature as representatives of the people will hold the Executive accountable.
The opening was however delayed for an hour and the Speaker profusely apologises to the Premier, Members of the House, our esteemed guests, the media and all stakeholders for the unprecedented delay. The delay was as a result of heavy rain across Gauteng hampering the timeous departure of buses from the departure point from the five regions of Gauteng.
The debate on the Premier’s State of the Province address will take place on 28 February 2012 starting at 10h00 at the GPL, corner President and Rissik Street, Johannesburg. The GPL takes this opportunity to invite the members of the public to attend and listen to the debate.
