Gauteng Provincial Government strengthens safety and security ahead of Soweto Derby

Gauteng Government mobilises maximum resources to ensure safety of supporters attending Soweto Derby

The Gauteng Provincial Government (GPG) is mobilising law enforcement personnel, operational resources and technology-driven policing capabilities to strengthen safety and security ahead of the highly anticipated Soweto Derby between Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs, taking place at FNB Stadium on Saturday, 31 October 2026.

As thousands of football supporters are expected to descend on the stadium, the provincial government, working in collaboration with the South African Police Service (SAPS), Metropolitan Police Departments (MPDs) and other law enforcement agencies, will intensify coordinated policing operations to ensure a safe and secure environment for supporters, motorists and members of the public.

The integrated safety operation will involve the deployment and reinforcement of law enforcement personnel, increased policing visibility, proactive patrols, traffic management, crime prevention interventions and coordinated monitoring of the stadium precinct and surrounding areas.

Through the Gauteng Traffic Police, Gauteng Traffic Wardens and other participating law enforcement agencies, the province will support efforts to maintain public order, manage traffic movement, deter criminal activities and respond swiftly to emerging safety and security threats.

A central feature of these operations will be the integration of Gauteng's e-Policing Strategy, which leverages modern technology to enhance conventional policing, strengthen operational coordination and improve the ability of law enforcement agencies to prevent, detect and respond to criminal activities.

The provincial government will also deploy drone technology to provide aerial surveillance of the stadium precinct and surrounding areas. The drones will assist in monitoring crowd movement, traffic conditions and potential safety and security risks, providing operational teams with an enhanced view of the environment to support timely interventions.

The operations will further be supported by mobile command-and-control capabilities, which will facilitate the monitoring of activities, communication between deployed units and coordination of law enforcement responses. Members of the public are also encouraged to

utilize the e-panic button for any emerging safety emergencies to alert law enforcement personnel and private security.

This integrated approach demonstrates how the province is bringing together human resources, operational intelligence and technological capabilities to strengthen public safety.

The provincial government remains committed to ensuring that major public events are supported by coordinated, proactive and responsive policing operations, while strengthening the safety and security of communities beyond the stadium precinct.

Supporters are encouraged to cooperate with law enforcement officials, comply with traffic regulations, remain vigilant and report suspicious activities.

Members of the media are invited to witness Gauteng's integrated law enforcement and e-Policing operations, including the deployment of personnel, mobile command-and-control capabilities and drone surveillance technology, as follows:

Date: Saturday, 31 October 2026
