Gauteng Provincial Government to improve monitoring to strengthen the functioning of departments

At its ordinary Executive Council (EXCO) meeting last week, the Gauteng Provincial Government (GPG) re-affirmed its commitment to improve the performance, monitoring and evaluation of all provincial departments and agencies in a bid to improve service delivery.

The EXCO also approved the National Government’s Evaluation Policy and the GPG’s Evaluation Framework which set out plans to measure progress in key government programmes starting from the current financial year.

The Council also discussed the findings of two independent evaluation reports on the GPG’s projects such as the Siyazondla Food Gardens and the Expanded Public Works Programmes (EPWP).

The Siyazondla Food Gardens is part of the GPG’s programmes to deal with the food insecurity and poverty affecting many families around the province. The findings show that the Siyazondla programme is having a positive impact in addressing food security and hunger in the communities where it is implemented. It has been recommended that the provincial government improve the design, efficiency and scale of the programme and ensure that it is sustainable.

Discussions were also held around the EPWP and the EXCO decided, amongst other things, that there was a need to further explore training needs of the beneficiaries of the project. It was also decided that the GPG consider making use of existing institutions of Further Education and Training (FETs) to ensure that more learners on the programme received accredited training and certificates.

The Women’s Monument and Living Heritage Centre project was also discussed. This is a provincial initiative that seeks to pay homage to the legacy of the heroines of the 1956 Women’ March.  It is situated at the Lillian Ngoyi Square in Pretoria.
