Gauteng province launches women’s month in Kagiso

The Gauteng Province is realising the dream of a 100 year old granny by building her dream house. Motlalepule Moalusi had kept a 17 years old house plan of how she wanted her house to look like.

Gauteng Premier Nomvula Mokonyane, Local Government and Housing MEC Ntombi Mekgwe, Community Safety MEC Faith Mazibuko and Mogale City Executive Mayor Calvin Seerane today demolished the old house with a bulldozer to make way for the newly built house envisaged to be completed before the end of the women’s month.

The Provincial government was launching the Women’s month programme in Kagiso 1, Mogale City. Speaking at the launch, Premier Mokonyane said “Today we are going to demolish the old house and build a better house for Mme Moalusi and her kids”. She added that the title deed of the house will remain in Granny Motlalepule’s name and the house will remain a family home.

Premier Mokonyane also said that the province has six other projects for the focus month to honour women throughout Gauteng. Premier added that little by little they will also assist others.

Local Government and Housing MEC Ntombi Mekgwe said that her department wants to play a role in changing the lives of the people. “Our elderly have played a significant role in our lives, it is because of them that women can now be recognised in our country”, she said adding that the march that women undertook in 1956 must bring meaning to their lives.

The Premier, Local Government MEC, Community Safety MEC, Executive Mayor together with the woman contractor unveiled the seven roomed modified house plan to the granny and family. The contractor mentioned that they added the wheelchair facilities and rails to granny’s old house plan. She said that the reason they decided to build the house from scratch was that the current structure could not be renovated because of the rules and norms governing contractors. “It was also part of my social responsibility to give back to the community’, she said.
