Gauteng Premier sends her condolences to the Sebetso family

Gauteng Premier Nomvula Mokonyane has reacted with shock and sadness to news that SABC Senior News Reporter Kgomotso Sebetso has died. Sebetso's car crashed into a truck on Sunday evening. He was taken to hospital in a serious condition and died early on Monday morning.

Mokonyane said she had known Sebetso for many years through his work at the SABC as well as when he joined and served in the public service for seven years before returning to the public broadcaster.

“He was one of the most professional journalists I have ever come across,” says Mokonyane. “He was very engaging in his interviews and was never confrontational or pretended to know more than his interviewees. He was a good listener and that’s what made him different.

"His departure reminds me of the words of 16th century English philosopher Francis Bacon who once said: ‘In order for the light to shine brightly, the darkness must be present’.

"It is only now that Mr Sebetso has passed on that we really realise the value that he had as a journalist but also as a South African who loved his country. He really did a lot through his work to build the democracy that we so much enjoy today.

“I wish to convey my deepest condolences to his family and friends. They must take comfort in the knowledge that they are not the only people who have lost someone dear to them, the entire country is in loss.

“To his colleagues in Auckland Park, I know the void that he is going to leave among those who were working close to him. I can only wish them strength at this difficult moment,” said Mokonyane.
