Gauteng Premier congratulates Baby Bafana for reaching final

Gauteng Premier Nomvula Mokonyane extends her best wishes to the South African men’s Under 23 team that takes on Ghana in the final of the All Africa Games taking place in Mozambique on Saturday, 17 September 2011.

Mokonyane and the entire Gauteng Provincial Government executive council would like to send a personal message of encouragement to the squad’s coach, Ephraim “Shakes” Mashaba, for “giving us hope and something to cheer about in a week where so many negative things have happened”.

The Premier said: “We learned with great merriment that Baby Bafana had managed to win their tough semi-final game against Senegal through penalties. We know that Senegal and most nations from West Africa are always giving us a hard time when we play against them, regardless of which level we engage them in. It is therefore fitting that we let the boys and coach Mashaba know that we are following their progress and cross our fingers that they go all the way to collect their gold medals at the podium.

“We believe that Mashaba will once again guide this national squad to greater heights after having done us proud before by qualifying for the Sydney 2000 Olympics previously. You will remember that we also beat Brazil during those Games.”
