Gauteng moves to improve services at its big hospitals

The Gauteng Department of Health is implementing a range of measures at its four biggest hospitals in an effort to improve services and quality of care.

The four hospitals, Chris Hani Baragwanath, Steve Biko, George Mukhari and Charlotte Maxeke are in the process of employing staff in critical areas in line with department's effort to turnaround healthcare in the province.

The MEC for Health in the province, Mr Hope Papo has stated that the implementation of the turnaround strategy is non-negotiable and all institutions have to implement measures to ensure that patients experience a better service.

Chris Hani Baragwanath has recently appointed 141 nurses, four pharmacists, 20 cleaners, 10 porters and 10 security officers.

The capacity of the neonatal intensive care unit has been increased to improve care for very ill children with low birth weight. The hospital delivers 2 000 babies a month many of them from mothers who experienced complications while giving birth.

In an effort to improve cleanliness, the hospital has initiated a campaign to discourage visitors from littering. A total of 100 additional bins have been distributed throughout the sprawling hospital complex to collect waste.

Steve Biko hospital has embarked on a process to employ anaesthesiologists and nurses to enable it to reactivate three theatres and intensive care unit beds.

A total of 27 intensive care unit nurses are being sought to fill vacant posts at George Mukhari. The hospital plans to increase the number of intensive care unit beds and install maternity theatres.

Charlotte Maxeke hospital is in the process of appointing retired nurse to work at its help desk assisting patients and visitors with vital information they need to access services.

Senior managers at the hospital are now obliged to do daily rounds checking the level of cleanliness.

The hospital has recently filled close to 250 posts for nurses, doctors as well as administration and support staff.

These four hospitals are the busiest in the province and together attend to between 26 000 and 105 000 patients monthly at their outpatient departments.
