The Gauteng Liquor Board will issue all converted licences by 31 December 2010

The Gauteng Liquor Board (GLB), under the auspices of Department of Economic Development is concluding the process of converting liquor licences granted under the National Liquor Act 27 of 1989 to licences under the Gauteng Liquor Act of 2003.

This process of conversion which started at the end of 2008 will be finalised on 31 December 2010. Section 143 of the Gauteng Liquor Act 2 of 2003 placed an obligation on 1989 licence holders to apply for a conversion. The conversion process and subsequent extensions were published in the Provincial Gazette inviting National Licence holders in Gauteng to convert before or on 1 March 2010. Licence holders who failed to convert licences are now in possession of invalid licences and are compelled to stop trading and apply for a new licence.

This means, Liquor Traders who did not apply for the conversion before 1 March 2010 have to stop trading and re-apply for a new licence to trade.

The total number of application received, by 1 March 2010, was 6261 and that's the total number of applications which are in the process of being converted.

The Head of the Department Khulu Radebe said, "The Gauteng Liquor Board has been given the stipulated date of the 31 December 2010 to finalise and issue converted licences. We also urge all other licence holders renewing their licences to make renewal payments at the nearest First National Bank (FNB) branch after receiving a reference number from GLB Regional Office."

Steps to be followed when applying or renewing liquor licences:

  • All applicants should approach their respective Regional offices when applying for conversion of their licences
  • Regional offices will provide them with form 11, which is the application form for a conversion, then a Reference Number to the applicant
  • The applicant will go to the nearest FNB branch to make a payment
  • The receipt issued by FNB should be taken back to the regional office to be processed as part of the application, together with a certified copy of original licence and proof of proof of renewal notice
  • No Cheque payments are allowed
  • Only one payment is allowed for each application (One transaction per application)
  • All deposits require a valid reference number which can you receive at the Gauteng Liquor Regional Offices when applying or renewing the licence.
