Gauteng Legislature sends condolences on the passing of boxer Peter “Terror” Mathebula

The Portfolio Committee Chairperson William Matsheke on behalf of the Portfolio Committee on Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation is saddened by the passing on of boxing Legend Mr. Peter “Terror” Mathebula.

The Gauteng Provincial Legislature Portfolio Committee on Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture, led by the Chairperson Honourable William Matsheke wish to send its heartfelt condolences to the Mathebula Family on the passing on of Mr. Peter “Terror” Mathebula who was the first black World Champion. Mr. Mathebula became the first black World Champion when he won the WBA World Championship in 1980 in the USA.  Mr. Mathebula hailed from the streets of Mohlakeng township in the West Rand, Gauteng.  He went on to conquer the boxing world during the difficult times of apartheid.

On behalf of the Gauteng Sport Community we want to send our deepest condolences to the Mathebula family, the boxing family in Gauteng and South Africa. Mr. Mathebula was a motivation to young people that no matter where you were born, or under which circumstances you grow when you are talented nothing can stop you said Chairperson William Matsheke. We are proud that the Gauteng Department of Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation conferred the lifetime achievement award to Mr. Mathebula in 2017 and hosted a tournament in 2017 together with the Rand West City Local Municipality and Supersport to celebrate his life while he was still alive concluded Chairperson Matsheke. His family indicated that he passed away on Saturday at Leratong hospital following an illness aged 68 years. The Portfolio Committee calls upon Gauteng Boxing, Boxing South Africa, Gauteng Department of Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation and the Municipality to give Mr. Mathebula a befitting sends off, The Portfolio Committee has already been in touch with the family and will be visiting the family on Monday, 20th of January 2020 at 10:00.
