Gauteng provincial legislature SCOPA statement on the passing of Auditor-General Kimi Makwetu
The Standing Committee on Public Accounts (SCOPA) of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature (GPL) has learnt with shock and is deeply saddened by the untimely passing of outgoing Auditor-General of South Africa Kimi Makwetu;
Mr Kimi Makwetu passes on at a time when he was in the process of finalising his 13 -year tenure at the Office of the Auditor-General; and was due to hand over the reigns to his current Deputy Ms Tsakani Maluleke in the coming weeks.
During his tenure as the Auditor-General of South Africa, Kimi Makwetu worked closely with public accounts committee and government on ways strengthen good governance; and enhancement of public sector accountability. Amongst his many substantive achievements and contributions, Makwetu championed the Amendment of the Public Audit Act; which prescribes stringent actions against mismanagement and misuse of public funds. At the time of his passing, Mr Makwetu had greatly facilitated engagement with Public Accounts Committees within the in parliament, provincial legislature and municipalities on their role of preventative and pre-emptive oversight - ensuring interventions to improve audit outcomes at the end of each financial year.
His passing has robbed his family, colleagues, and the entire nation of an outstanding leader known for his patriotism, passion, excellence and warm spirit. Though he has departed, Kimi Makwetu’s legacy shall live on for many years to come; and his immeasurable contribution to building public confidence will always be celebrated. SCOPA Chairperson Sochayile Khanyile sends a message of condolences and comfort to his family and friends in the wake of this tragedy and wishes his family great comfort during this difficult time.
