Members of the Gauteng Legislature were this morning given a taste of what is to come when the World Cup kicks-off in June.
Leading supporters from Premier Soccer League (PSL) soccer teams, draped in colourful Bafana Bafana regalia, joined the proceedings to open the legislature with song and dance. It was an unusual but welcome departure from the normal structured way of doing things during the opening ceremony. Members were happy to join in on the fun as they clapped hands and danced to the entertainment provided by supporters in the Legislature.
And as it has become a tradition on these occasions, the ladies scored big in the fashion stakes with well-tailored outfits and exquisite hats. Hats were big again this year. MEC for Health and Social Development, Qedani Mahlangu, looked elegant in a black and white sleeveless dress with a black hat. Most men opted for the traditional black suits.
The Speaker, Lindiwe Maseko, wore a pink outfit with a cream white hat and matching shoes. The woman of the moment, Premier Nomvula Mokonyane, donned a gold outfit with matching shoes, necklace and earrings.
A number of dignitaries, including African National Congress (ANC) veteran and struggle icon Ahmed Kathrada and businessman mogul Richard Maponya, attended the opening. They were joined by the high commissioners from countries such as Zambia, India, China and the United Kingdom.
