In an effort to guarantee safety at Gauteng public health facilities, the Health department is paying R113 million per annum to a range of security companies.
Some of the long term contracts awarded to these companies ended in 2010; 2011 while others in 2012. Currently, they are providing services on a month to month basis until a new security model for the sector has been finalised.
The department is following a decision taken by the National Health Council that provinces should not award any new contracts of security while a study is underway on the security model for the sector to be finalised. The new model will ensure best value for money.
“Provinces were directed to extend contracts on a month to month basis while the model is being finalised as provided in the National Treasury general terms and conditions of state contracts,” says MEC Papo.
He added that the department is following rules and the month to month arrangement has not seen an increase in the costs other than the Statutory Sectoral determination of Private Sector Industrial Regulator Authority.
Currently, the department has obtained value for money on these contracts. If there is any corruption noticed, it will be investigated and the necessary steps taken against those involved.
“We are determined to root out corruption in the department and if any in noted harsh consequences will follow,” he said.
