Gauteng Health embarks on a big drive to recruit health professionals

The Gauteng Department of Health is embarking on a major drive to recruit doctors, nurses, specialists and allied professionals to fill critical funded vacant posts in all its hospitals.

MEC Hope Papo says the recruitment drive was intended to improve the quality of care and health system effectiveness.

“We are looking for doctors, nurses, registrars, dentals practitioners, pharmacists, and allied professionals such as radiographers, dieticians, physiotherapists and others,” Papo said.

An advertisement calling for applications is out today. Contact details and the names of hospitals with vacancies are contained in the advertisement.

Medical officers are being sought in the following fields: anaesthetics, cardiology, cardio-thoracic surgery, community health, ear, nose and throat, emergency medicine, family medicine, general surgery, intensive care, internal medicine, neurology, neurosurgery, nuclear medicine, obstetrics and gynaecology, oncology-radiation, ophthalmology, orthopaedic surgery, paediatrics, pathology, plastic and reconstructive surgery, psychiatry, transplant surgery as well as trauma and urology.

To ensure health system effectiveness, senior specialists are also being sought to head specialised units such as paediatrics, orthopaedic surgery and others.

The recruitment will ensure that the number of vacancies in the provincial health facilities is brought under control. Currently vacancies for medical practitioners stand at 12.2%, professional nurses is 5.2%, dental practitioners 3.6% and pharmacists is 10.8%.
