The Health MEC reported to the Gauteng Health Portfolio Committee that the department has recently, last week, blocked corrupt elements from syphoning R6 million from the department.
The MEC was reporting to the Gauteng Health Portfolio committee its progress in turning the department around. MEC Hope Papo told delighted committee members that through efficient and improved financial management reforms the "department was able to detect and block six million rands from being syphoned out of the public health to a group of corrupt public servants from Mamelodi Hospital and a service provider which was guised as buying of hospital linen."
"We were able to put a stop to this and the elements involved have been reported to the police," said MEC Papo. Papo said these are some of the positive results of improved financial management and efficient controls being put in place by the department. "These include measures to ensure that the Department gets value for money even from its staff including doctors."
