Gauteng Health on Baragwanath Hospital power outage

Gauteng Health apologises for Bara power outage

Gauteng MEC for Health Hope Papo apologises to the staff and patients at Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic hospital for the power outage experienced on Tuesday, 21 January 2014.

Power supply to the hospital was restored on the same day and the hospital is functioning at full capacity again. The department is currently establishing if there was any dereliction of duty by anyone in order to take appropriate action.

Electricity supply to the hospital was disrupted as a result of a stolen cable providing power to the facility. The disruption lasted from 2am to 10am. This necessitated the postponement of some surgical operations.

The hospital has twelve functioning generators which are always used whenever power supply interruptions are experienced. Two of these generators experienced problems on Tuesday and this affected the functioning of theatres.

Additional measures are also being put in place to better manage the situation in future.

This includes a plan to deal with the surgical operations that could not be done during the blackout.
