The Gauteng Provincial Government welcomes the decision by the Municipal Demarcation Board on the proposal to create a metropolitan municipal area in the West Rand.
The provincial government reaffirms its commitment to a metropolitan system of local government. This is informed by the vision of creating a seamlessly integrated, social cohesive, economically inclusive globally competitive city region.
While the Gauteng Provincial Government initially did not support the merger of Randfontein and Westonaria local municipalities it respects the Municipal Demarcation Board’s decision to merge them into a single municipal authority. We believe that this decision of the Municipal Demarcation Board which is an independent institution is impartial and based on criteria contained in law.
The Gauteng government remains concerned by the financial viability challenges faced by the two municipalities and the likely impact this may have on the new single municipality to be established. The provincial government will work with the municipalities and the national government to ensure that the new municipality is properly equipped to serve its people.
