The Gauteng Provincial Government welcomes the Public Service Commission’s intention to make it a criminal offense to avoid directives and recommendations it issues.
The commission is considering amending the Public Service Commission Act to address what it regards as a failure to implement the commission’s recommendations.
According to the commission the Gauteng government has lost over R19 million due to financial misconduct between 2009 and 2011.
Hundred and forty-nine (149) commercial misconduct cases were reported, most of the cases a total of 93 were in the then Gauteng Department of Health and Social Development, the majority of the cases were of theft followed by financial mismanagement.
Spokesperson for the Gauteng Department of Health Simon Zwane said: “We welcome the move by the Public Service Commission and fully agree that people must be held accountable for their wrong doings.”
The department has also put in place anti-corruption measures which include vetting people who work in supply chain management and it is a government wide practice to vet all public servants who hold management positions.
Gauteng Premier Nomvula Mokonyane has always prioritised the pursuit of a corruption-free environment and clean governance.
