Gauteng Government, Joburg and Tshwane to ensure residents are safe during youth march

The Gauteng Department of Community Safety will on Thursday and Friday work together with the SA Police Service (SAPS) and the Cities of Joburg and Tshwane to ensure that there is minimum, if any, disruption to traffic and business activities.

The department, together with the police and the Cities, have put in place tangible and comprehensive plans to make sure that the planned mass action by the ANC Youth League takes the form and shape as stipulated in the organisation's application for a permit to do so.

Past experiences have taught the relevant authorities that mass actions of this nature have a potential, and indeed have had a negative impact of the economy of the host cities as well as the province. Added to that, there have been inconveniences to the general public as a result of deviations from the plans and agreements.

The Department, SAPS and the cities recognises and respect that everyone has a constitutional right to hold protest marches, demonstrations and or public gatherings, but urge any person or grouping to do so responsibly. As Provincial Government, we have the responsibility to protect citizens, public and private property and will make sure that the planned demonstrations happen within the confines of the law.

Like any other public gathering and demonstration, the Youth League's mass action was granted permission to go ahead on condition that certain obligations are met in terms of the law. It is therefore important that government, through the Department of Community Safety and other relevant stakeholders, ensure that those conditions are not violated at the expense of the broader public and private business.
