The Gauteng Executive Council (EXCO) joins the rest of the country and the international community in mourning the passing of veteran of the anti-apartheid struggle and former Minister of Education, Kader Asmal.
“It is with sadness and dismay that we learnt of the death of Prof Kader Asmal – one of the shining lights in our struggle for freedom and the building of a better South Africa. Prof Asmal’s commitment to the struggle of the downtrodden and the voiceless will forever remain etched on the minds of all dedicated patriots,” said Premier Nomvula Mokonyane.
Asmal, who was aged 76 years old when he passed on yesterday, was a firm believer in the power of education in changing the lives of the poor. At the time of his death, Asmal was a professor of human rights at the University of the Western Cape; chairman of the council of the University of the North and vice-president of the African Association of International Law.
He will be best remembered for his sterling role in drumming up support for the anti-apartheid campaign during the heydays of minority apartheid rule.
The Gauteng Executive Council sends its condolences to Prof Asmal’s family during this dark hour.
May his soul rest in peace.
