Gauteng Education disputes reports of shortage of textbooks

The Gauteng Department of Education wishes to correct the South African Press Association (SAPA) story that claims that "some" Gauteng primary schools are without textbooks. That statement is misleading and incorrect.

There is a huge difference between workbooks and textbooks. Workbooks are supplementary books in Maths, Language and Life Skills that were issued to grades 1, 2, 3 last year, and extended to grades 4 to 7 this year. They are distributed by the national Department of Basic Education.

They give guidance to educators on what to teach and are aligned to the Curriculum Assessment and Policy Statement (CAPS). Textbooks are broader and would contain more information. In the absence of a textbook, a workbook can be used.

We are aware that not all workbooks for Term 3, which started on 16 July 2012, have been distributed. We have compiled a list to urgently request the supply of additional workbooks. We are also sending officials on Tuesday to assess the situation at Edenglen Primary.
