Gauteng Department of Education thanks grade 12 exam candidates

The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) wishes to thank all the Grade 12 learners who wrote the 2009 matric examination, which began in earnest on 1 November 2009 in 750 examination centres, throughout the province.

A total of 101 218 fulltime and 8 117 part time repeat candidates sat for the exam in 790 centres across Gauteng. The number of full time candidates was 2 234 more than the 99 984 who sat for their exams last year.

Many thanks also to all our educators, invigilators, officials and principals for their hard work in ensuring that learners write their examinations without any mishaps. The examination process is a huge logistical exercise, ensuring that correct question papers are delivered to all centres, on time, and to each of the 109 000 learners who sat for the exams.

All learners who sat for these examinations are advised that if they have not done as well as they expected, there are many options including re-writing some papers or going to an Further Education and Training (FET) College. The department appeals to parents to continue supporting and advising learners of these alternatives.

The department hopes that the hard work throughout the year would pay off. The department would also like to thank all parents who supported their children during this often stressful period.

The marking of exam papers have begun and the department is on schedule to meet the 18 December 2009 deadline for the completion of this task. The results will be released on the 7 January 2009.

GDE would like to wish all the Grade 12 learners good luck in their future endeavours.
