Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) suspends principal of Meadowlands High School

The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) has issued Mr Moss Senye, the principal of Meadowlands High School, with a precautionary suspension letter following his appearance in court last week Thursday where he was charged with assaulting a learner. This action is consistent with the way in which we respond to similar cases where there has been prima facie evidence of assault against learners such as at Witkoppen Primary, Filadelfia, and other similar cases.

District officials went to the school on Tuesday to serve the suspension letter on the educator and the school management team was informed of the pending appointment of an acting principal. Mr Senye received his letter of precautionary suspension at head office where he was at the time.

Sec 16 (3) of the South African Schools Act is clear that the management of schools falls within the exclusive competence of management and not governance. The School Governing Body has been formally informed of developments at the school.

At this stage the matter is sub judice and we would not wish to comment further on the merits of the case. Mr Senye enjoys the presumption of innocence until proven otherwise. We therefore urge all parties to respect the legal and administrative processes and to continue with learning and teaching.
