The GDE has deferred the Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS) orientation, scheduled for the October holidays to the fourth term.
CAPS is a concise policy document which will replace the current Subject and Learning Area Statements, Learning Programme Guidelines and Subject Assessment Guidelines for all the subjects listed in the National Curriculum Statement for Grades R to 12. CAPS will be implemented in the Foundation Phase (Grades 1 to 3) and Grade 10 in 2012.
The decision to defer the training is based on representation from some teacher unions that the October break is short and the fact that the majority of affected teachers have attended training in January before schools opened, as well as during the April and July schools holidays.
However, the GDE is still committed to provide support to all teachers to ensure that schools and teachers are ready to implement CAPS in Foundation Phase and grade 10 in 2012. The department is renegotiating the training for the fourth term.
