Disaster management centres on high alert and standby following predictions of heavy rains
All the disaster management centres across Gauteng municipalities have been put on high alert and on standby following predictions of heavy downfalls during the weekend. The South African Weather Services has predicted massive thunderstorms and possible hailstorm during the weekend.
Gauteng Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) MEC Jacob Mamabolo is sending a warning to all communities to be extra careful during this time and to act in a manner that will reduce injury and fatalities.
“Flooding is the usual culprit during heavy downpours, so people living in low-lying areas, near river banks must be extra careful and vigilante. Drivers are also warned to avoid crossing overflowing bridges as this may wash away their cars. If and when disaster strikes, I urge communities to show solidarity by working together and assist each other to save lives”, MEC Mamabolo said.
MEC Mamabolo has assured people of Gauteng that the Provincial Disaster Management Centre, which falls under COGTA, is fully activated and that Emergency Medical Services (EMS) in all municipalities are all ready to respond to any eventuality. The South African Police Services has also been brought on board in these preparations.
