Gauteng condemns attacks on foreign nationals

The Gauteng Provincial Government (GPG) has added its voice to the condemnations of acts of looting shops owned by foreign nationals in the province over the past few days.

The GPG has also praised law enforcement agencies for their swift apprehension of some of the suspects.

"These are clear acts of opportunistic crimes on a vulnerable group of Gauteng residents by a minority of hooligans living in our communities. Gauteng is a melting pot of all cultures and highly disappointing is that these acts take place during Africa Month, which highlights the unity of Africans across the continent," Gauteng Premier, Nomvula Mokonyane said.

"We call upon all our people across the province to refrain from taking part in attacks that we have seem in areas such Sedibeng and Diepsloot. We must all ensure that the repeat of 2008 does not happen," she said.

Mokonyane further urged communities to help identify and report the perpetrators of these horrendous acts to the police.

"Let us unite against any form of violence," said Mokonyane.
