In November last year, Gauteng Premier, Nomvula Mokonyane, launched the Buyisa Ubuntu Sustainable Livelihoods Programme (Food Bank) with the intention of collecting over one million rands worth of food during the first year with an increase of 20 percent per year.
The purpose of this programme was to distribute food to low-income families in serious distress.
The Gauteng Provincial Government has joined forces with Bold Moves, a section 21 company made up of business people and community leaders who assist to coordinate the business community and stakeholders to help the Premier deliver on her key priorities.
Bold Moves assist in areas such as Education, Health, Social Services, Fighting Crime and Moral Regeneration.
This year the Gauteng Executive Council took a decision to call on all public servants and members of the public to donate non-perishable food items and cosmetics to the needy in support of the Buyisa Ubuntu Programme.
These donations can include tinned cans, baby cereals, breakfast cereals, toothpaste, soap and sweets for kids. Last year the 11 tons food was collected and this year civil society and business are again urged to support the campaign generously.
All provincial departments have brightly coloured dustbins at the entrances of buildings where government employees can place their donations. Members of the public can take their donations to the Trade Centre Hillfox, Roodepoort the food will, on a regular basis, be collected by officials from the Department of Health and Social Development - Directorate Sustainable Livelihood.
It will be distributed to the vulnerable and poor before on 22 December in Sharpeville and Kagiso.
