Gauteng’s improved audit outcomes to enhance service delivery

Gauteng Provincial Government (GPG) has received a clean bill of health from the Auditor-General. Two departments received clean audits, nine unqualified reports with only one with a qualified audit opinion on their financial statements for the financial year 2010/11. None of the departments and entities received disclaimers.

The achievement of these unqualified reports is more than a mere symbolic achievement for GPG. It is the result of hard work, responsible financial controls and keeping a tight rein on the administrative environment.

Departments that performed badly in previous years have shown a great improvement in the 2010/11 financial year. This will go a long way in building public confidence and accountability on how the government spends public funds, while improving service delivery and strengthening democracy.

Gauteng Premier Nomvula Mokonyane says the executive council is pleased with the current audit outcomes. She says service delivery and the improvement of the quality of life of people of Gauteng is central in measuring the progress that the province is making.

“We are encouraged by these audit outcomes and we are hopeful that in the near future all our departments will receive clean audit reports. When this happens, the accelerated service delivery to the public will go a long way toward regaining our peoples’ confidence.

“It is through collective efforts, commitment and proper coordination that we have been able to get the results that we have. “We will continue to put measures in place to ensure better financial management practices and good governance for the smart province in South Africa,” says Mokonyane.

Mokonyane’s target is for all GPG departments, entities and municipalities to receive clean audits by 2014.

She further notes that the improvement has been the doing of a great management team and that much credit has to go to her members of the executive council, the heads of department who are ultimately the accounting officers and their chief financial officers.
