Gauteng’s Alexandra Renewal Project scoops top United Nations (UN) honours

Gauteng’s MEC for Local Government and Housing, Kgaogelo Lekgoro, will early next month, receive a scroll of honour from the United Nations (UN) habitat for the Alexandra Renewal Project the province’s flagship urban revitalisation project.

“We are delighted that we have been selected to receive this award. We see this as a vote of confidence on the policies that we have pursued as government. We have identified other urban renewal projects following the notable success of the Alex Renewal Project.

We have approved development for the Tembisa and Winterveldt Urban Regeneration projects in order to improve historical townships existing in our province. We also have the 20 Priority Township Project (20PTP), which is also being implemented around the identified townships of Gauteng. We are working tirelessly to provide housing, security and comfort for our people,” said MEC Lekgoro.

It aimed among other to build houses, fix urban infrastructure, build parks, resuscitate the Jukskei River, convert hostels into family units and change the urban landscape of Alexandra.

“Many commendable candidates were considered for this award. It was our unanimous opinion that the Alexandra Renewal Project should receive the award this year for its outstanding efforts in upgrading the housing, social and physical infrastructure of the Alexandra neighbourhood and improving the living conditions for its residents,” said UN habitat.

MEC Lekgoro will receive the scroll of honour in Washington DC on 5 October 2009.

He will be accompanied by the MMC for Housing in the City of Johannesburg and Mongezi Mnyani, the Local Government and Housing acting Head of Department.
