Free State Transport MEC Butana Komphela's message to road users during festive season

The festive season is, once again, upon us! We deservedly must rest and celebrate life as we share quality time with our families, loved ones and friends. I therefore appeal to all road users not to allow road accidents to spoil the festivities and joyous celebrations of the year-end period.

I urge all road users - pedestrians, passengers and motorists - to act responsibly and take the greatest care when traveling to and from their holiday destinations. Losing loved ones, or having them injured in road crashes is everyone's worst nightmare, particularly during this time of the year, yet every year this is a scenario faced by too many families in our Country. We need to work together to put an end to this situation.

I’m urging motorists to be mindful of the five main causes of accidents on our roads: that is speed, dangerous driving, drinking and driving, fatigue and driving un-roadworthy vehicles. If everyone takes care to avoid involvement with each of these factors we will all be driving to survive and ensuring safer journeys for all road users.

On behalf of the Department of Police, Roads and Transport in the Free State, I wish all South Africans a peaceful Christmas, a safe and prosperous new year.
