Free State Transport impounds overloaded heavy vehicles

Free State traffic cops nab too heavy vehicles

Cops of the Department of Police, Roads and Transport today nabbed three heavy vehicles that were way over the weight limit as indicated on their permit.

Two low bed trucks of NRB Logistics in Durban carrying a 100 000 kg Terex dumper were pulled off the N8 near Bram Fischer Airport in Bloemfontein. They were immediately impounded after it was established they only applied for permits for a mass of up to 45 000 tons.

A permit for the latter cost about R16 000 and the former had nearly double that amount. The trucks travelled from Van Rheenen via Bethlehem, Ficksburg and Bloemfontein and were heading for Sishen in the Northern Cape. Both trucks were impounded by the law enforcement officers.

Another truck of Westmead Logistics also carrying heavy duty machinery was also impounded because it had no permit to travel on the roads of the Free State Province.

Damage to provincial roads infrastructure as a result of overloading leads to higher maintenance and repair costs and shortens the life of our roads which in turn places an additional burden on the provincial government as well as law-abiding citizens who ultimately carry the costs of careless and inconsiderate overloading.
