When Kabelo Mothibi and Thapelo Taoa left the country in 2009 they could not say a word in Spanish and now they speak the language fluently. These are two students who went to study a degree in Physical Education and Sport in Cuba and are now back on vacation after about two years away from home. Their fluency in Spanish is thanks to a concentration in language proficiency during the first year of study tin Cuba.
Kabelo is a resident of Mangaung/Bloemfontein while Thapelo resides in Rasebei/Edenburg. Both these youngsters were identified as having potential and were awarded bursaries by Sport and Recreation South Africa in August 2009 to study for a degree in Physical Education and Sport.
On the eve of their departure an emotional send-off function was held in their honour to bid them farewell in 2009. Since that send-off function the two students have not looked back. They committed themselves to dedicating all their energies and time to their studies and making worth of the opportunity afforded by the Department of Sport and Recreation.
The two students are on vacation from 19 June 2011 and will leave back for Cuba on 6 September 2011 to finish their six years of study. During their vacation they are expected to showcase and put into practice what they have learnt thus far. The department will include the two students within the existing sport and recreation activities being staged within the province to showcase their acquired skills and knowledge.
The MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, Mr Dan Kgothule, wishes them well in their further endeavours to complete their studies.
