The newly Free State School Sport Controlling Body (FSSSO) had its first Structural Development Workshop on the 12 to 13 August 2010 at Gold Guests House in Welkom for its Management Committee. The organisation was officially launched by the MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation (SACR), Mr DAM Kgothule and the National Minister of Sport and Recreation Reverend MA Stofile on 28 April 2010 at Grey College Pavilion. The structure was the second of its kind to be established in the country.
The purpose of the workshop was to map up the strategic direction for the organisation in terms of operations and guidance to school sport structures in the province. The structure was established through a consultative process from local level to provincial level of management of school sport. It comprise of Local School Code Committees, Town Code Committees, Zonal Code Committees, District Code Committees, the Provincial Forum and the Provincial Executive Committee.
Provincial Forum is represented by chairpersons of Code Committees, SGB Members and the Teacher Unions. The Executive Management Committee is the elected members of the Provincial Forum. The provincial committee is structured as follows: the chairperson, deputy chairperson for secondary schools, deputy chairperson for primary schools, deputy chairperson for Lsen Schools, Secretary/Treasurer and one additional member as well as two officials from Syrac and two officials from STD that serve as ex officio members.
The committee will also be in charge of overseeing all schools sport activities such as Competitive Sport and Mass Participation in schools. The committee will be funded directly by the Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation Directorate for Sport and Talent Development at provincial level and by the Department of Education, Syrac Directorate from local to district level.
The committee will also serve as advisory structure to the MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation as well as the MEC for Basic Education.
