Thousands of new drivers on the roads
The Department of Police, Roads and Transport have tested nearly 670 000 persons for learner driver and drivers’ licences in the past five years in the Free State.
From 1 April 2009 until end of January 2014, a total of 88 422 persons passed their drivers licence while 163 370 failed. This averages about 50 000 people being tested tor drivers licences every year. During the same period, 217 537 persons passed their learners licences and 205 480 failed. The average per year is about 84 000 testing for learners licences.
Currently the department is also experiencing a problem of high numbers of people booking for both learners and drivers’ licence testing but not turning up. During the 2012/13 financial year, a total of just over 11 000 people made appointments but never turned up on the day of the appointment.
The department is requesting members of the public to cancel appointments in time if they know that they will not be able to come for their tests. This will assist the department to render efficient and effective services to citizens as their time slots will be allocated to those who need services from the department.
