Free State Government launches three major events

Infrastructure and Economic Cluster launches three major events (National Tourism Career Expo, Macufe, and Global Trade Bridge)

Today marks the end of Tourism and Heritage month that we have celebrated through various activities throughout the Province. The celebration of Tourism month enabled us to focus on the importance of tourism to the economy.

This year’s theme encompassed the important aspect of protecting our heritage, energy and water. Our emphasis on living heritage is to promote cultural diversity, social cohesion, reconciliation, peace and economic development.

The celebration of these annual activities in the province provided opportunities for SMMEs in the arts and craft industries, cultural landscape, heritage sites and cultural festivals thereby addressing the national imperatives of economic growth and poverty alleviation.

Our broader strategy of dealing with the challenges that our society faces includes the focus on sectors that have the potential to create sustainable livelihoods and economic growth.

This statement deals with the three main events that speak to the sectors that we have identified to revitalise the economy, increase productivity and enhance global competitiveness.

We are launching the following events:

  • The National Tourism Careers Expo (NTCE) under the theme: “Tourism: Alive with Opportunities”
  • The Free State Global Investors Trade Bridge under the theme: “Pursuing Investment Growth”
  • Mangaung African Cultural Festival (MACUFE) under the theme: “When Your Heart and Soul is African”

Free State is ready for NTCE 2015

The Sand Du Plessis Theatre (PACOFS), in Bloemfontein, will be a place to be from the 01-03 October 2015. Some 10 000 learners, 750 educators, close to 500 unemployed graduates and tourism students will converge at the theatre for the National Tourism Careers Expo (NTCE) 2015 under the theme “Tourism: Alive with Opportunities”.

The expo aims to position tourism as a valued and vibrant career of choice, and drive South Africa’s National Tourism Sector Strategy’s (NTSS) goal of creating 225 000 tourism jobs opportunities by 2020.

The 3 day event programme includes among others:

  • Presentations and motivational talks from SA's leading tourism entrepreneurs and personalities
  • Exhibitions from Free State tourism operators and related organisations
  • Platforms assisting youth and unemployed graduates to prepare for job applications.

All eyes will be on Youth Business Zone where young people will be given an opportunity to present their business propositions or concepts to a panel of adjudicators. The aim is to afford young people who have vibrant and dynamic ideas to enter into the tourism space and contribute towards the development of tourism in the Free State.

The competition targets young people at tertiary institutions and unemployed graduates in tourism, hospitality and consumer studies. The winning concept will be afforded funding opportunity to implement the idea.

The benefits of hosting the NTCE in the province and in Mangaung Metro in particular include economic spin offs throughout the tourism value chain.

The event is a partnership between the Department of Tourism (NDT), the Culture Arts, Tourism, Hospitality & Sport Education Training Authority (CATHSSETA), the Free State Department of Economic, Small Business Development, Tourism and Environment Affairs (DESTEA) and the Free State Tourism Authority (FSTA).

Free State Global Investors Trade Bridge (FSGITB)
